Walnut End Grain Counterop

Walnut for countertops is best described by its deep chocolate brown color, smooth straight or wavy grain patterns, and moderate hardness.  Color and Appearance ranging from a warm medium brown to a rich, dark chocolate, sometimes with a subtle purplish cast.  Walnut also features creamy white to yellowish-white outer sapwood bands, which can be selected out for a uniform look or included for rustic contrast.  Natural markings often accented by dark mineral streaks and occasional curly or wavy gran figures.  Grain direction typically is straight, but can feature irregular, wavy or curly variations that add decorative character.  The overall surface feel of walnut possesses a medium, uniform texture that finishes to a soft natural luster.

Beautiful grains showing a tight straight & subtle grain, giving it a sleek contemporary, and minimalistic aesthetic.  Some unique figure variations occasionally appear; such as the sought after "Birds Eye", "Fiddleback" or "Curly" variation.

White Oak Face Grain

White Oak for countertops is best described as an exceptionally hard, durable, and water-resistant hardwood featuring a calm, warm-neutral tone and a straight, tight grain.  Color is light tan, pale yellow-brown with subtle gray or olive undertones.  White Oak Deepens slowly into a richer, warm golden-brown patina over time. Creamy white to pale yellow sapwood, usually distinct from the darker heartwood unless blended.  Grain patterns mostly straight and regular with a medium to course texture.

Face Grain in Cherry

A premium closed-grain wood celebrated for its reddish-brown color.  It is uniquely distinguished by its photosensitivity, meaning it naturally darkens and develops a deep, lustrous amber patina when exposed to light.  Fine, straight, and relatively unpronouned grain with a smooth, satiny texture.  A perfect wood for countertops, shelving & fine furniture.

Brazilian Cherry also known as "Jatoba", a highly durable and exotic hardwood we call a "Specialty Wood" freshly milled heartwood is a salmon-orange brown, but it oxidizes rapidly when exposed to light, deepening into a rich luxurious cherry-red to reddish-brown.  Jatoba has a fine to medium texture with an interlocked grain pattern, often featuring darker, striking mineral streaks.  Very hardy and offers an upgrade from American Cherry in color and richness.  Jatoba is an exotic with a more pricey price tag but well worth the investment.

Pecan Live Edge Bar Top

Pecan is a very versatile , dense Texas native hardwood characterized by its striking "calico" color contrast, featuring Extreme color variations, light to medium brown, sometimes reddish heartwood mixed with distinct creamy white to yellowish sapwood.  The grain is typically straight but can be wavy or irregular, frequently featuring, dark mineral streaks and striking contrasts that give it an exotic, rustic look.

The center island is the hub of the kitchen from food prep, hosting parties or after school snacks. Traditionally, End Grain was the choice for butchers and typical chopping blocks.  Today it is used in spaces looking for that unique piece for their home.  End Grain butcher block tops can be used as a work station with a quality wood oil finish or with a hardy non cutting finish for low maintenance.

An Edge Grain countertop is built by cutting wood boards into narrow strips, turning them on their side so the narrow edges face up, and gluing them together.  This creates a striped surface with parallel lines that is strong and stable.  Shows clean straight lines, resists warping and cracking when exposed to changing room temperatures and moisture.  Is in the middle price range for wood countertops as it requires twice as much wood to build then a face grain top.

Expanding a dark, enclosed kitchen into a large, bright, but functional space for an avid bread baker posed several design challenges. The original kitchen was divided by a wall from the dining room, which had large windows facing onto a magnificent eighteenth-story city view. The client wanted to remove the wall in order to open the kitchen to the windows. Yet the client, who loves to cook, did not want to lose useable working space. In addition, because the apartment is located in a high-rise condominium, the plumbing could not be moved, requiring us to anchor the prep area around an inconveniently-located sink. In addition, the client insisted on a large bread area with a butcher’s block countertop that needed to be balanced against an otherwise modern aesthetic. 

Solutions
We solved the workspace concerns by creating three work zones. Zone one uses one side of the island and countertops around the sink to build a prep area. Zone two groups the cooktop, refrigerator, and an undercounter oven into a cooking space. An 18-inch inset in the island creates a three-sided work area around the cooktop. Zone three provides the client with a large end-grain mesquite butcher’s block worktop and a French-door wall oven for baking. To extend the kitchen into the former dining room, we used a handmade face plank mesquite counter-height breakfast bar with a hand dovetailed waterfall leg that echoes the waterfall on the island. The bar provides an eating area that allows diners to look out the windows onto the city lights and stunning sunsets while simultaneously permitting the cook to keep an eye on pots on the stove. By using wood on the breakfast bar, we tied together the two sides of the kitchen, wrapping the modern white matte glass-fronted cabinets in the warmth of the deep reddish hues of the mesquite. The bar lays directly on an American-quarried soapstone countertop shot through with quartz veining that mirrors the grain in the wood. A cork floor offers a soft support for long hours of cooking, and acid etched mirror glass backsplashes bounce light without reflections. A colorful glass cityscape mosaic behind the sink mimics the views out the window and, along with a wall of vintage food posters, brings splashes of color into the kitchen.
